Hospital Food

An aerial view of a typical hospital lunch in Japan. The yellow plastic tray contains a bowl of white rice; a cup of cabbage "soup"; scrambled eggs with ketchup "sauce"; a cup of plain tea; some grapes; and a salad of iceberg lettuce.

I checked into the hospital this morning for knee replacement surgery tomorrow, and I should optimistically expect to be in the hospital for 10 to 14 days.

I queued up some stories to write and recipes to post if I have the mental fortitude, but I’d expect more hospital food shitposting than anything else…if my post anesthesia brain even coöperates with that!

See you on the other side!

  1. I’ve always wondered why it is that hospital food is (by my experience) about 80/20 terrible/acceptable. And, why there’s so little choice. Food = comfort to so many people and there’s so little to look forward to when you’re in a hospital, you’d think they’d make it a mission to at least get that right? I understand you can’t have a restaurant style menu, but imagine how different it would be if there was at least a choice or two you could make?

If at least they could say, well, we’re trying to provide healthy/nourishing food to ailing people, but man, at least in Japanese hospitals I’ve been in the standard does not meet that requirement for sure most of the time – even according to the hospital nutritionists I’ve had to see after some of my surgeries – it boggles the mind.

But here’s to hoping you have to suffer that food for the least possible amount of time!! … And if it causes you to write some quality sh*tposts here and there, that’ll be fun too!

  2. Fingers crossed for a safe and successful operation, and some better than normal hospital food!

it Me!
A selfie of Scout, sitting in the back seat of a car, with a smile on her face, the window rolled down, and her blonde hair blowing in the wind.

I’m Scout. I live in a really small apartment in Tokyo, with a ridiculously tiny kitchen, a wee balcony garden, an adorable little asshole of a cat, and a relatively normal~sized husband.

And honestly? On any given day, I’m just trying to make lunch happen…
